Champions Not Seniors

The Champions Tour of PGA used to be the Seniors Tour.  Wow!  I like this name so much better.  How about you?  I’m not sure when they changed the name, but it’s been a while.

This past week the 2012 U.S. Senior Open took place at Indianwood Country Club in Lake Orion, Michigan.  Like the U.S. Open, this is hosted by the USGA, not the PGA.

If you are a non-golfer, you may be confused about the names.  If you are a golfer, you may also be confused about the names.  It’s taken me a while, but the PGA is for professional golfers.  The pros under 50 years old play in these events and the Champions Tour for professionals over 50 years of age.

The USGA is the United States Golf Association.  They create the rules, update them and do many other golf-related things that I’m sure I’m not aware of.  They also host the U.S. Open and the U.S. Senior Open.  I guess they decided to continue with ‘Senior’ in the name of this event.

Here is an article from the Detroit Free Press about this event of last week.

This is a video clip of Tom Watson, who played in this event.  The first couple minutes of this press interview, he reveals that he spent his summers on Walloon Lake in northern Michigan.  Interesting, I had not heard that before.

Tom Watson is in his early sixties and looks great.  We attended this event on Friday.  It was fun to see so many of the players we’ve seen for years on TV or at the PGA events in which they played for years.
