Seventy Years After Pearl Harbor

Yesterday was the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

I heard an interesting interview on the radio with a college professor who is an expert in the history of the Pearl Harbor attack.  He had some interesting side-bars to discuss.  One of the most interesting things is that when President Roosevelt made the radio address on Sunday afternoon to inform the American people, it took a day or so before the public really took it seriously.

Three years earlier, there had been a radio broadcast by Orson Wells called ‘War of the Worlds’ that had been a hoax about Martians having landed in New Jersey.  People were feeling they didn’t want to get suckered in again…  People were actually calling the radio stations and wanting to know when the regular shows would resume.

And apparently it was a few ‘fireside chats‘ by Roosevelt on the radio, before it sunk in with the people.  After all, we all know that mass-communication was quite simplistic in those times.  It was radio and newspaper…  That was all.  And who had heard of Pearl Harbor?  Most people may not have even known too much about Hawaii at all, much less a US Naval base there.

This four minute video is an interview with Jim Edwards, a Pearl Harbor survivor, who lives in Louisville, Kentucky.  Fascinating if you choose to watch it.  You can well imagine the reality of one of his last comments about still remembering the event that happened so many years ago.

By the way, I apologize for any inconvenience while viewing this for the ‘pop-up’, very short video ads.  I guess that’s the price of ‘free’ videos!
