Woodward Dream Cruise

If you are not from southeast Michigan, you may not be familiar with the Woodward Dream Cruise.  Woodward Avenue is a major ‘boulevard’ type road that runs from downtown Detroit all the way up to Pontiac, probably a span of 25 miles.  The cruising part of Woodward was basically in Oakland County, which is just north of the city of Detroit,  for about an eight mile stretch.

The Woodward Dream Cruise was created in 1995 to be the 3rd Saturday in August and a one day event where people could reminisce about their youth and cruising Woodward.  The rule  is that you can drive in the ‘Dream Cruise’ officially if your car is a minimum of a 25 years old model.

Well, in 1995 that meant nothing newer than a 1970 model vehicle.  Even the 1970 models at that time were on the fringe.  After all, when cruising was in it’s prime, (when the Baby-Boomers were cruising on Woodward), the cars were much older than that.  The other day, I heard a talk show host joking about a 1985 mini van cruising this year and being booed.

This event is free, family friendly and a great fund-raiser for the local charities and service organizations.  A number of years ago, when I was a member of Birmingham Rotary, I headed up the committee that sold the official ‘cruise wear’ as I used to call it.  They allowed the service clubs to become vendor for the day and earn money.  The best year we had when I was still involved we netted over $11,000.  Wow!  Lots of money in tee shirts!

The interesting thing about the Dream Cruise, is that what started out as a one day event in 1995, evolved into a week-long happening while I was still living in the area.  I’m not sure about it now, except for what I hear about it on the radio talk shows.  I guess it’s continued to evolve into a really big event!

Because I have not lived in the area for about five or six years, I’m not first-hand knowledgeable about the details of it all now.  But I thought this live video would be fun for anyone interested.

If you know about the Woodward Dream Cruise, what are your feelings about it?  Some locals seem to really love it and others seem to really want to get out of town during this weekend.

If you don’t live in Michigan, what events do you have in your area that seem like good family fun?

Brian Tracey: From Rags to Non-Rags

Brian Tracey is one of my first personal development ‘mentors’.  I became familiar with back his work back in the 80′s.  He’s achieved so much success in the field of speaking and personal development, but I didn’t know his background untill I watched this short video.

Perhaps you too will be surprised at his ‘story’.

Brian Tracey is a great example of success after sixty, although he was certainly a success at an early age as well.

What is your first recollection of Brian Tracey?

The Real Identity Theft

Recently I learned of Dan Wheeler, a victim of Identity Theft, who will possibly experience emotional turmoil for the rest of his life.  Because we market Pre-Paid Legal and Identity Theft Shield, I read a lot of stories of victims of this crime.  In fact a few weeks ago, I received notice of this story through my Google Identity Theft alert.

The really frustrating thing for us who know more about Identity Theft than the average person, is that there is so much wrong information and misinformation out there.  The average person can’t distinguish between the various services being offered.  Some people probably believe it doesn’t matter which service you have and I believe some people still think, if they have bad credit, they don’t need anything!

The reality is that Identity Theft knows no boundaries.  It doesn’t matter what your credit history is, what gender, race, age or marital status you are.

If you currently have an Identity Theft service from your bank, credit card company or homeowners insurance policy, do you really know what it covers?

What if someone used your name and information when they were arrested on a DUI… how would these policies help you?  What if someone were being arrested for a crime and they used your name and information… how would these policies help you?  What if someone used your health insurance information to get a test for HIV… how would these policies help you?  What if someone was working in your SS# and you learned about it… how would these policies help you?

Identity Theft Shield covers all types of Identity Theft.  If you are a victim, you are assigned a licensed investigator to work on your behalf to put the pieces of your life back together.  That’s how our service would help you in all of the above situations.  And who are the licensed investigators you may ask…  Kroll, Inc. offers this service through Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. and their investigators are licensed through the FBI.  Kroll has been the leader in fighting Identity Theft since 1999.

If Dan Wheeler had had Identity Theft Shield, we probably wouldn’t even know who he is.

There are so many services out there that muddy up the waters and give consumers false security.  One of the most well-advertised companies, has only been around three to four years, and also just paid the FTC $11,000,000 to settle a class action law suit for misleading the public with their claims.

Oops!!!  I’ve gone on much too long.  But I am passionate about getting the word out, especially with all the stories of what has happened to people because of Identity Theft.  For more information call me or click here.

P.S. This isn’t exactly Internet or Social Media information, but because of technology, Identity Theft is on the rise.

Jack Canfield: Success Principles

Who hasn’t heard of Jack Canfield, co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books!  This video is from a few years ago, when he came out with his new book at that time, The Success Principles. I’ve not personally read this book, but have heard it’s praises from others who have.

What I find a bit interesting, is to learn about Jack Canfield’s early childhood and the challenges he faced and overcame to become the success he is still today.

What books by Jack Canfield have you read?  What is your favorite?

Attitude Matters When It Comes To Aging

One thing I normally don’t dwell on here at Sixty Something Now, is aging and all the things related to this concept.  But let’s face it, aging is what it’s all about, right?!  We do not want the alternative, so aging is it!  And Monday is the day we write about various aspects of it or about people who have aged well.

Recently I read about a study that was done and written about concerning the biology of this concept.  I chose not to copy it here but to provide the link, in case you choose to read the entire article.  It’s not too terribly long, but longer than I typically provide here, thus this link.

What is your mindset about aging?  One question raised by this article is about whether there has been a self-fulfilling prophecy concept of aging well or not aging well.  That being said, I believe I’ve had a fairly good mindset about aging, for the most part.  I believe I figured out many years ago, that to some extent how we age is related to how we think.

Actually, I think our culture’s concept of aging has changed in the past few years because the ‘baby-boomers’ are quite different in so many ways than any other segment of our population previously.  And there is so much information everywhere we turn on ways to age well.

How do you feel about aging and how are you thinking about it?

Just Plain Funny

Years ago, I loved the Carol Burnett Show.  There just is nothing like it today, although maybe these are just different times, and people’s idea of comedy is different.  Well, maybe not…  I just saw this and didn’t remember it at all.  I was curious as to where it was going, and what would be the ‘punch line‘… View this to the end and maybe you’ll laugh as much as I did.

They were the days when there was a show to look forward to that would make us laugh, just to laugh and have fun!  What’s not to like…

Who Was Chris Burnett?

Remember back in the 60′s when The Carol Burnett Show was one of the best rated shows?

Do you remember the young woman, Vicki Lawrence, who had approached Carol Burnett, to ask if she could portray Carol’s real sister, Chris?  Vicki had friends tell her how much she resembled Carol Burnett and to the extent she could be her sister.

Here is a clip of the two of them and they definitely do look like sisters!

Here is the clip:

However, I spent the first semester of my college life in the dorm with the real Chris Burnett, and she didn’t look like Vicki Lawrence at all!

Chris Burnett spent only one year at Moravian College in Pennsylvania before she moved on.  I had arrived in mid-semester, due to my January graduation from high school, and was placed in a dorm with eleven other young women.  The dormitory was actually a historic building on campus and as I recall, a pretty rare experience for me, being not yet 18 years old and thrust into college life within a week of high school graduation.

This is quite a digression from the hilarity of The Carol Burnett Show and later Carol and Sis.  Do you remember these shows?

We all have our life stories, and this is part of mine.  I always felt connected to Carol Burnett after my first year in college, although I never met her.   Hmmm!!!   Where are they now!!!

Jim Rohn: Four Questions

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know how I enjoy the writings on the philosophy of Jim Rohn.  This video is taken when he was presenting at a live event somewhere.  By the way, even though the time on this video indicates five minutes, the video itself runs about 3 1/2 minutes.

Even though this is about ten years ago, the message of his writings and videos are timeless.  A regret that I have is never having seen Jim Rohn in person.  He passed away last December 2009 and is terribly missed.  However his work lives on and I have a link to his ongoing website on the lower right side of this blog page and my website.

If you are familiar with Jim Rohn, what are your thoughts about his work?

Enterprise is Better than Ease

Enterprise Is Better Than Ease by Jim Rohn

If we are involved in a project, how hard should we work at it?  How much time should we put in?

Our philosophy about activity and our attitude about hard work will affect the quality of our lives. What we decide about the rightful ratio of labor to rest will establish a certain work ethic. That work ethic—our attitude about the amount of labor we are willing to commit to future fortune—will determine how substantial or how meager that fortune turns out to be.

Enterprise is always better than ease. Every time we choose to do less than we could, this error in judgment has an effect on our self-confidence. Repeated every day, we soon find ourselves not only doing less than we should, but also being less than we could. The accumulative effect of this error in judgment can be devastating.

Fortunately, it is easy to reverse the process!

Any day we choose, we can develop a new discipline of doing rather than neglecting. Every time we choose action over ease or labor over rest, we develop an increasing level of self-worth, self-respect and self-confidence. In the final analysis, it is how we feel about ourselves that provides the greatest reward from any activity. It is not what we get that makes us valuable, it is what we become in the process of doing that brings value into our lives. It is activity that converts human dreams into human reality, and that conversion from idea into actuality gives us a personal value that can come from no other source.

So feel free to not only engage in enterprise, but also to enjoy it to its fullest along with all the benefits that are soon to come!

To Your Success,

Jim Rohn

Jim Rohn was such a treasure with his wise thoughts and his special ways of expressing them.  Recently I received this in an email from a colleague and I thought you would enjoy it.
